In Loving Memory of Daniel Soares RibeiroGrampapa was born in Hong Kong on Christmas Eve 1903. When his father died, he and his mother went to live in a quintal . Grampapa told a lot of ghost stories about the time they were living in the quintal. Before that, he and Aunty Lucia and their mother lived with Aunty Edith and Uncle Angelo for some time. Uncle Angelo told a story about Grampapa when he was a little bratty kid living with them. Whenever he misbehaved his mother would put a big rattan chair over him and she would sit on top of it until he stopped misbehaving. He had his own band (Lyric Orchestra Band) to make extra money on weekends. One day when he came home, he found his mother dead. To be sure, he put a mirror in front of her face and when the mirror did not blur up, he knew that she was dead. Grampapa hated dogs. When he was little, his mother gave him one cent to go and buy tau-foo-fah (bean curd porridge). He was chased by a dog and fell down with his bowl of tau-foo-fah and cut his face. He carried the scar all his life and never got over dogs. Grampapa married Ignez Fernandes on 2 May 1925. Avo Ignez was born in Macau. She was the daughter of Antonio Justino Fernandes and Maria Agusta Barreira. The bridesmaids at their wedding were Ignez’ two sisters Madelena and Beatriz. Nieces Evelyn and Rita were the flower girls. He had a knack for fixing things and he liked his cars. I will always remember him as “Oink” for that was his favourite expression when he was interrupted tinkering with his hobbies. He was also a great one for making up words, like “chah ping” (the bogie man). Grampapa and his sons had something in common. They were always early and thought ahead. When Grampapa was going somewhere, he was always ready, sitting on a chair, waiting and twiddling his thumbs. He hated to wait. Avo Ignez died at the age of 32 of acute streptococcal tonsillitis, streptococcal septicaemia. When she was dying in Hong Kong, her good friend Josefina in Macau dreamt of her calling her to go back to Hong Kong to take care of her children. Josefina went to Hong Kong and Avo Ignez passed away, and Grampapa was widowed with their children all under the age of 13. So Grampapa married Avo Josephina. Then World War II broke out and the family went to Macau to live during the war years. When the war ended the family returned to Hong Kong and Grampapa worked for the Hong Kong Electric Company until his retirement when he and Avo emigrated to Canada and then to the United States to join his daughters there. Grampapa was a gentle, quiet, self-made man, whose silent strength, strong sense of family, quick wit and sense of humour is something his family is proud to inherit. He passed away peacefully in San Francisco in 1995 at the age of 91 and his memory will always remain in our hearts. The children of Daniel and Ignez. From Left to Right: Francis, Yvonne, Dorothy, Mildred, Eric. Avo Josefina“Ah Bella Peccinina” (Avo used to sing this song to me)No-one could have asked for a better grandmother than Avo. She was selfless in her devotion to Daniel and Ignez's children and her loving tenderness has touched each of our lives, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren alike. Avo is a "tall lady", ever immaculately presented, super efficient and thoughtful who made every Christmastime and indeed every family birthday, an occasion to remember. She was fond of music and excelled at traditional Macanese cooking. Her recipes are treasured among the family. When Grampapa died in March 1995 Avo continued to live with Yvonne and Robert in Pacifica, California until she passed away peacefully at 7:50pm on 5 May 2008. Danny and Aunty Mo were present in the room with her. Jane, Aunty Dorothy, Uncle Robert and Adrie were there as well. Eric Jr. got there when he got the news of her passing. Her wishes were to be buried with Grampapa. God rest her soul.
