Betty White 1917-20081. Beatriz Esperanca Ribeiro Fernandes(b. 22 August 1917 Kowloon, d. 29 September 2008 UK). Betty is the daughter of Laura Maria Soares Ribeiro and David Jose Maria Fernandes . m. George James White (14 July 1911 - 22 Dec. 1996) 29 March 1936 Rosary Church, Kowloon Their daughter: (i) Joan Maud White (b. 8 August 1937, Hong Kong) Aunty Betty's story: Aunty Betty married Uncle George in Rosary Church on 29 March 1936. Uncle George was the son of George Sinclair White and Dorothy Perreira. He was born in Foochow, China on 14 July 1911. Uncle George worked for Hong Kong Land as a Tenancy Supervisor until they went to live in England. He died in Southampton on 22 December 1996. Aunty Betty was my father's favourite cousin and it is not hard to see why. I was never made to feel more welcome every time I visited Aunty Betty and Uncle George in Southampton. I was flatting in London at the time, and each time I travelled down to the south coast of England for a weekend or passed through Southampton on my way to or from Europe it always felt like a homecoming, giving great meaning to the saying “Minha casa e tua casa” (my house is your house). At the time the Whites lived at 12A Pond Street, Southampton, in a two-story brick English country house surrounded by a rose garden. I remember Uncle George made beautiful Alderberry wine to serve with Aunty Betty's delicious traditional Macanese cooking and I had a feast whenever I visited. They would also take me for drives in the New Forest where we picnicked, to see the brown English squirrels and the deer. Uncle George loved growing roses. He was proud of his roses, one in particular which he named "Caramba" because when he first saw its huge size, he exclaimed "Caramba" which means "Good grief" in Macanese. Uncle George was playful full of fun. He loved Aunty Betty dearly and they were very happily married. Uncle George died in Aunty Betty's arms on 22 December 1996. Aunty Betty recently passed away at 5am on 29 September 2008 in England. Please join us in a prayer for her soul. 26 Ormond Close, Fair Oak, SO50 8FG, United Kingdom. Email Joan |
